Searches for wineries near Barcelona lead to the same answer again and again: Penedès. It is the wine and cava region closest to the city, and a private driver is the easiest way to see more than one cellar in a day. This page explains where to go, how long it takes, what the car costs and how to plan the day.
Where the wineries near Barcelona are
Most guests asking for “wineries in Barcelona” mean the Penedès region to the southwest. Its centre, Vilafranca del Penedès, is 54 km from Plaça de Catalunya and about 45 minutes by car without traffic (route on Google Maps). The region is known for cava, the Catalan sparkling wine, and for still white and red wines.
Because the cellars are spread across villages and vineyards, a morning and an afternoon visit fit into one day. The Catalonia tourism site has background on the wine routes of Catalonia, and individual wineries publish their own tasting times.
Cava wineries near Barcelona
Cava is the reason many guests come. Several producers around Sant Sadurní d’Anoia and Vilafranca open their cellars to visitors, with a tour of the vaults and a tasting. I do not list individual wineries or their prices here, because opening days and tasting menus change. My suggestion is to choose two cellars with different styles, for example a large cava house and a smaller family estate, and I plan the drive between them.
The related Penedès wine tour and vineyard and wine tour pages describe the day in more detail.
Wineries near Barcelona by train or by car
The train goes to the region, but the cellars sit outside the stations. After the train you still need a taxi or a long walk, and the timetable decides when you must leave. By car the plan is yours: you start when you want, stop where you want and finish with dinner in Sitges or Barcelona.
With a driver there is one more advantage. Nobody has to stay sober to drive, so the tasting is a tasting.
Price of a private driver for a wine tour
A wine day is booked as a driver at your disposal. Prices are in euros, include VAT and are per vehicle. Tastings and tickets are paid at the winery.
| Vehicle | 6 hours (minimum per day) | 8 hours | Each additional hour |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mercedes E-Class (up to 3) | €470 | €630 | €80 |
| Mercedes V-Class (up to 7) | €470 | €630 | €80 |
| Mercedes Sprinter (up to 16) | €610 | €785 | €90 |
| Minibus (up to 33) | €685 | €900 | €110 |
| Coach (up to 60) | €685 | €900 | €110 |
The S-Class is also available by the hour. The full table is on the prices page. Larger groups, such as a company outing, usually go in the Sprinter.
How to plan a day among the vineyards
- Choose two or three visits, not five. A tasting takes longer than you expect, and a rushed visit is not enjoyable.
- Book each winery in advance. Many open by appointment only, so confirm times on their own sites.
- Plan lunch. Some estates serve food, and a long lunch is part of the day. The car waits.
- Mix the stops. One large producer and one small estate gives a broader picture of the region.
- Combine with Sitges or Montserrat if time allows. Sitges is on the coast near Penedès, and Montserrat is a classic partner for a wine day.
Other wine areas
Penedès is the nearest, but not the only one. If you want more variety, or you are interested in a particular grape, tell me and I look at whether the route is realistic in one day. Longer drives mean more hours, and anything beyond a day is quoted on request.
The day trips from Barcelona hub lists the other routes I drive.
Which vehicle for a wine day
The E-Class is the choice for a couple or three guests. The V-Class takes up to 7, which suits a family or a group of friends and leaves room for the bottles you buy. For a company outing the Sprinter takes up to 16. Read more about the Mercedes V-Class if you are deciding between the two.
If you plan to buy wine, tell me. Cases are heavy, and I adjust the seating and the boot space to suit.
A sample day in the Penedès
The shape of a good wine day is simple, and you can adapt it.
- Morning: leave Barcelona, arrive at the first cellar for a tour and a tasting.
- Midday: lunch at the estate or in a nearby village.
- Afternoon: a second, different winery, then the drive back or on to the coast.
Times depend on the bookings you make with each winery, and I adjust the schedule around them. A day like this fits inside the 6 or 8 hours in the table above, and I tell you in advance if the plan will need more.
Choosing your wineries
When guests ask which wineries to visit, I ask what they like to drink. Fans of sparkling wine head for the cava houses, while lovers of still whites look for smaller estates in the hills. Others care more about architecture, a historic cellar or a lunch with a view. Tell me which of these matters most and I help you build a route that has a clear theme, so the day does not blur into a list of tastings.
