Cadaqués is the Costa Brava at its most remote: a white village folded around a bay, reached by a mountain road that discourages casual visitors. That distance is part of its appeal, and it is the reason a driver helps. You sit back for the climb, and you are not the one parking in a village built for donkeys.
Barcelona to Cadaqués: distance and drive time
Cadaqués is 170 km from Plaça de Catalunya, about 2 hours 15 minutes without traffic (route on Google Maps). The motorway takes you to the Girona area quickly, and the last stretch is a narrow road over the hills with many bends. If you are prone to car sickness, tell me when you book and I drive accordingly.
This is the longest of the Costa Brava day trips I regularly plan. If you would like something nearer, read about the Costa Brava or Begur and its coves.
What a Cadaqués day trip costs
A day trip is hired by the hour with the driver at your disposal. The daily minimum is 6 hours. The estimate below is a round trip of 2 h 15 min each way plus 4 hours on site, rounded up to the half hour: 8.5 hours of hire. Prices include VAT and are per vehicle.
| Vehicle | Seats | Day estimate (8.5 h) |
|---|---|---|
| E-Class | 3 | €665 |
| S-Class | 3 | €1,055 |
| V-Class | 7 | €665 |
| Sprinter | 16 | €825 |
| Minibus | 33 | €950 |
| Coach | 60 | €950 |
The S-Class is booked by the hour only. A longer stay means extra hours at the hourly rate on the prices page. A one-way transfer is quoted on request.
What to do in Cadaqués
The village rewards walking. The old streets lead down to the waterfront, where the church sits above the bay, and the shore has small beaches and rocky coves. Artists have gathered here for a century, and the Dalí link is strong: his house at Portlligat is close to the village. I do not state opening times or ticket arrangements for any house or museum, because they change; check the Catalonia tourism website or the attraction’s own site before you go.
Most guests spend their time on a walk, lunch near the water and a swim. Four hours on site is a good plan. If you like the idea of a quieter day, tell me and I schedule a later arrival.
Cadaqués with the Dalí Museum in Figueres
Figueres is on the road north, so a stop at the Dalí Theatre-Museum adds little to the drive but a lot to the day. It does make the trip longer than the 8.5-hour estimate, and the museum has its own visiting arrangements, listed on the museum’s website. Book your entry there; I plan the timing around it.
Barcelona to Cadaqués by bus, train or car
You can reach Cadaqués without a car, but there is no direct train to the village, and the bus service takes longer than driving. Rome2rio-style journey planners are a good way to see the options. A private driver makes sense when:
- you want a door-to-door day with no changes;
- you travel with a family or a group;
- you want the Figueres or Girona stops on the way;
- you would rather not drive the last bends yourself.
Choosing the vehicle
The E-Class is the quiet choice for a couple. The V-Class takes up to 7 passengers and costs the same as the E-Class on this trip, which is why I often suggest it for families. For groups, the Sprinter takes up to 16, the minibus 33 and the coach 60; the narrow streets of the village are not suited to a coach, so I would drop a large group at the edge of the village. See the fleet.
Planning your day in Cadaqués
Cadaqués is a place where the planning matters more than the sights. Points I raise with every guest:
- Start early. With more than two hours each way, a morning start gives you a decent stay and a drive back in daylight.
- Expect the road. The final stretch is narrow and winding, and in summer it can be slow. I leave margin so you are not hurried.
- Walk the village. The centre is for pedestrians, so wear comfortable shoes. I drop you as close as the streets allow.
- Decide your priority. A long lunch by the water, a swim, or the Dalí connection: the day works best with one clear priority.
Parking and access in the village follow local rules that change, so I do not quote them here. Ask me when you book, and I will tell you what I know about the date you choose.
What a Cadaqués day looks like
A typical day follows the hours in the estimate. You are collected in Barcelona in the morning and driven north, with the option of a coffee stop near Girona. You reach Cadaqués in time for a walk through the old town and the waterfront, then lunch, and then free time for a swim or a second walk. The drive back starts in the late afternoon, and you are in Barcelona in the evening.
If you want to add a second place, tell me early. The day is already long, so every addition has to replace something.
Cadaqués in different seasons
The village has a strong seasonal rhythm. In summer it fills with day visitors, the streets are crowded and the road in is slow, so an early start pays off. Spring and autumn are calmer, with softer light and easier walking. Winter is quiet and some places close, so I advise checking before you pick a date.
The wind can also play a part on this coast, and it changes the feel of a day by the sea. If your date is flexible, I can suggest which week suits you best once you tell me what you want to do.
