Begur is a hilltop village in the Baix Empordà, ringed by small coves that take their names from the fishing villages below. It is a long day trip from Barcelona and an easy one with a driver: you leave your address, stop where you like on the way, and come back without worrying about the last bus.
Barcelona to Begur: distance and drive time
Begur is 131 km from Plaça de Catalunya, about 1 hour 45 minutes without traffic (route on Google Maps). That is further than the closer resorts, so the day starts earlier. The last part of the drive is on narrower local roads, and in July and August the villages around Begur are busy by late morning.
If you want a nearer stop, my page on the Costa Brava covers the southern coast, and the Tossa de Mar day trip is shorter.
What a Begur day trip costs
A day trip is hired by the hour with the driver at your disposal. The minimum is 6 hours per day. The estimate here is a round trip of 1 h 45 min each way plus 5 hours on site, rounded up to the half hour: 8.5 hours of hire. Prices include VAT and are per vehicle.
| Vehicle | Seats | Day estimate (8.5 h) |
|---|---|---|
| E-Class | 3 | €665 |
| S-Class | 3 | €1,055 |
| V-Class | 7 | €665 |
| Sprinter | 16 | €825 |
| Minibus | 33 | €950 |
| Coach | 60 | €950 |
The S-Class is booked by the hour only. If you stay shorter or longer, the final price follows the hours, using the hourly rates on the prices page. A one-way transfer to Begur is quoted on request.
Begur and the coves
The village sits above the sea, and the coves below are the draw. Calella de Palafrugell, Aiguablava and Sa Tuna are the names visitors look up first. I do not state walking times or parking arrangements for individual coves, because they change with the season and the local rules. The Catalonia tourism site is a good starting point for the coast.
What I do is plan the order. A common day: the village first, while it is quiet, then one cove for a swim, then lunch, then a second cove if there is time. Tell me whether you want to swim, walk, eat or photograph, and I shape the day around it.
Barcelona to Begur by train, bus or car
Rail and bus connections to Begur exist, and journey planners such as Rome2rio’s Barcelona to Begur page list them. They suit solo travellers with light bags and flexible timing. The private driver is the answer when:
- you travel as a couple or family and want a door-to-door day;
- you want to see two or three coves rather than the village alone;
- you arrive by air and want to go straight from Barcelona-El Prat;
- you travel in a group and one vehicle is simpler than many tickets.
For transfers from the airport, send me your flight details; the trip to Begur is quoted on request.
Begur with Cadaqués or Girona
Some guests ask to combine Begur with another stop. Girona is an easy addition on the way back, covered on the page for a private Girona tour. Cadaqués is further north and makes the day very long, so I would pick one or the other.
Choosing the vehicle
The E-Class works for two or three guests who want a quiet ride. The V-Class takes up to 7 and costs the same as the E-Class on the table above, so it is my pick for families. A group of up to 16 uses the Sprinter, and the minibus and coach take 33 and 60. See the fleet.
Planning your day in Begur
The day is long, so a little planning goes a long way. A few points I raise with every guest:
- Start early. With nearly two hours each way, a start in the morning leaves you time on the coast and avoids driving back too late.
- Pack for the sea. Swimwear, a towel and shoes you can walk in. The coves are reached on foot from the road, and the paths can be uneven.
- Decide your priority. If it is a swim, I keep the village short. If it is the village and lunch, I plan fewer coves.
- Tell me about mobility. Some coves involve steps, and I can suggest the easier ones.
I do not quote opening hours or beach facilities, as they change with the season. Check the local tourism pages before you travel, or ask me and I suggest what to look up.
What a Begur day looks like
A typical day, using the hours in the estimate, runs like this. You are collected at your address in Barcelona and driven north, with a coffee stop on the way if you wish. You reach the village, walk its lanes and its viewpoints, then head to a cove for a swim and a long lunch. The late afternoon is for a second cove or a wander, and then the drive back, arriving in the evening.
If you prefer a gentler pace, shorten the list of stops and keep the lunch. The time on site is a number I adjust, and the price follows the hours you actually use.
Begur in different seasons
The village changes with the calendar. In summer the coves are crowded and the roads slow, so I advise an early start and a plan that avoids the middle of the day on the beach. In spring and autumn the coast is calmer, the light is good for photographs, and the sea is cooler for swimming. Winter is quiet, with some places closed, which is why I suggest checking local pages before you pick a date.
Whatever the season, the drive is the same length, so you can decide the date first and the stops afterwards.
