Montserrat is the easiest day out from Barcelona and one of the most memorable: a serrated mountain range, a Benedictine monastery and views that stretch toward the Pyrenees on a clear day. A Montserrat day tour from Barcelona with a private driver gives you the mountain without the timetables, and it gives a family or a small group one vehicle for the whole trip.
Montserrat day tour from Barcelona: the drive
The monastery is 60 km from Plaça de Catalunya, about 1 hour without traffic (route on Google Maps). The final stretch climbs the mountain, so the last part is slower than the motorway. In summer and on weekends the access road can be busy, and for an early start I plan a departure that gets you there before the crowds.
You travel in an air-conditioned Mercedes with a driver who drops you at the monastery and meets you at the time you and I agree. I do not offer a guided visit; what I provide is the transport, the plan and a driver who waits for you.
Two ways to book Montserrat
There are two sensible models, and the price depends on which you choose.
A transfer. If you only need to be taken to Montserrat, or taken back, there is a fixed price per vehicle. All prices include VAT.
| Vehicle | Passengers | Barcelona to Montserrat |
|---|---|---|
| Mercedes E-Class | up to 3 | €135 |
| Mercedes V-Class | up to 7 | €135 |
| Mercedes Sprinter | up to 16 | €410 |
| Minibus | up to 33 | €495 |
| Coach | up to 60 | €495 |
A day at your disposal. If the driver should wait for you and bring you home, you hire by the hour. The minimum is 6 hours per day. For Montserrat I use a round trip of 1 hour each way plus 3.5 hours on site, which fits the 6-hour minimum exactly.
| Vehicle | Seats | Montserrat day (6 h) |
|---|---|---|
| E-Class | 3 | €470 |
| S-Class | 3 | €745 |
| V-Class | 7 | €470 |
| Sprinter | 16 | €610 |
| Minibus | 33 | €685 |
| Coach | 60 | €685 |
The S-Class is booked by the hour only. If you stay longer, extra hours are charged at the hourly rate shown on the prices page.
What to see at Montserrat
The monastery and its basilica are the centre of the visit, and the mountain setting is the reason most people come. The official Montserrat visitor site lists the basilica, the museum, the funicular, the cable car and the walking paths, and it is the place to check opening arrangements and anything that needs booking in advance. Entry to attractions is not included in my price, and I do not sell tickets.
A short visit usually covers the monastery square, the basilica and a viewpoint. A longer one adds a walk on the mountain or one of the funiculars. Tell me how you want to spend the time and I set the pick-up time accordingly.
Best time of day for Montserrat
Early starts pay off. A morning departure puts you at the mountain before the day-trip groups arrive, and it leaves the afternoon free for a second stop. If you prefer a slower day, a late-morning start with lunch in a village on the way back also works. I do not publish fixed times, because the best slot changes with the season and the day of the week.
Montserrat with a winery or a second stop
Montserrat sits on the way to several other places, which is why a private driver makes sense. A frequent combination is Montserrat in the morning and a winery in the afternoon; the vineyard and wine tour page describes the wine side. Another is Montserrat on the way to or from the Penedès cava country, covered on the Penedès page.
If you add a stop, the day moves from a simple transfer to an hourly hire. I send you the estimate before you confirm.
Which vehicle for Montserrat?
For a couple or three guests, the E-Class is the comfortable choice. For a family of five, the V-Class takes up to 7 and costs the same as the E-Class on the table above, so I often recommend it. The Sprinter suits a group of up to 16, the minibus up to 33 and the coach up to 60. See the fleet for each vehicle, or read the Mercedes V-Class page.
For the other classic trips from the city, go back to the day trips from Barcelona overview.
Montserrat by train or with a driver
Montserrat can be reached on your own, and many visitors do it by rail and the mountain railways. That is a fair choice for a solo traveller or a couple on a flexible day. What a private driver adds is control of the timetable. You leave when you are ready, you do not wait for connections, and you are not tied to the return time of a particular service.
It also helps with the practical parts of the day. Families with young children, older relatives, and anyone with a mobility need can be dropped as close to the monastery as the access rules allow, and picked up at the same place. Groups benefit even more, since one Sprinter or minibus replaces many tickets and keeps everyone together.
Planning your Montserrat day
A few points I raise with every guest:
- Decide the length. A half day is enough for the monastery square and the basilica. A full day lets you add a walk, a funicular or a winery.
- Check the visiting arrangements. The official Montserrat site publishes what is open and what needs booking. I do not quote opening times, since they change.
- Dress for the mountain. It can be cooler and windier at the monastery than in Barcelona, and the paths are uneven.
- Tell me about mobility. The access to some viewpoints involves steps or a climb, and I can suggest the easier options.
With those answers, I fix the departure time and tell you whether a transfer or an hourly hire fits better. If the plan changes on the day, tell me and I adjust the hours; extra hours are charged at the hourly rate.
How to book your Montserrat tour
- Use the form below, or the contact page.
- Enter the date, the pick-up address in Barcelona and the time you would like to be at Montserrat.
- Tell me whether you want a transfer or a day at your disposal, and how many passengers and bags.
- I reply by e-mail or WhatsApp with the vehicle and the price, VAT included.
- Confirm and the day is booked.
If you are not sure which model fits, send me the plan as you imagine it and I recommend one.
