Figueres is the town where Salvador Dalí was born, and the museum he built from its old municipal theatre is the biggest single reason people leave Barcelona for a day. The Dalí Museum from Barcelona is within easy reach of the city, but the logistics, getting to the station, the timing and the return, are what a private driver removes.
Dalí Museum from Barcelona: distance and drive time
The Dalí Theatre-Museum is 138 km from Plaça de Catalunya, about 1 hour 40 minutes by car without traffic (route on Google Maps). The motorway makes it a straightforward drive north, past Girona, to the Empordà plain.
You will find searches for the Dalí Museum in Barcelona. There is no Dalí Museum in Barcelona itself: the museum is in Figueres, a town in the province of Girona. A day trip is how you see it.
What a Dalí Museum day trip costs
A day trip is hired by the hour with the driver at your disposal. The daily minimum is 6 hours. The estimate here is a round trip of 1 h 40 min each way plus 4 hours on site, rounded up to the half hour: 7.5 hours of hire. Prices include VAT and are per vehicle.
| Vehicle | Seats | Day estimate (7.5 h) |
|---|---|---|
| E-Class | 3 | €590 |
| S-Class | 3 | €930 |
| V-Class | 7 | €590 |
| Sprinter | 16 | €740 |
| Minibus | 33 | €845 |
| Coach | 60 | €845 |
The S-Class is booked by the hour only. Museum entry is not included and I do not sell tickets: book yours on the museum’s official website, where the visiting arrangements are published. Stay longer and the extra hours are charged at the rates on the prices page.
Planning the day around your ticket
The museum entry is usually the fixed point of the day, so I work backwards from it. Send me the entry time you book, and I set the pick-up so you arrive with time in hand. If you prefer to decide on arrival, tell me and I leave the day open.
A typical shape: depart Barcelona in the morning, visit the museum, lunch in the old town and a short walk before the drive back. The estimate above allows for 4 hours on site.
Beyond the museum: Dalí in Cadaqués and Girona
The museum is the centre of a wider trail. Dalí lived and worked at Portlligat, near Cadaqués, and his public image was bound up with the Empordà coast. A day that includes both is long, with the drive to Cadaqués adding to the 7.5 hours. Girona, covered on the page for a private Girona tour, makes a good stop on the way home.
If you prefer the beach to the museum trail, the Costa Brava page shows what that day looks like.
By train, bus or private driver?
A train takes you to Figueres, and a short walk or taxi reaches the museum. For a solo traveller on a flexible schedule, that works. A private driver is the right choice when:
- you travel as a family or a group and want one vehicle;
- you want to add Girona or Cadaqués without changing transport;
- you have limited mobility or heavy bags;
- you are short on time and want the day planned for you.
Choosing the vehicle
For two or three guests, the E-Class is quiet and comfortable. The V-Class seats up to 7 passengers and costs the same as the E-Class on this trip, so I recommend it for families. The Sprinter handles up to 16, the minibus 33 and the coach 60 for group or school trips. See the fleet.
Planning your Figueres day
Figueres is a small town, and the museum is its heart. Points I raise with every guest:
- Book the entry yourself. I do not sell tickets, and the museum publishes its visiting arrangements online. Choose an entry time, then tell me.
- Allow time beyond the museum. The town has a centre to walk and places for lunch, which is why my estimate allows 4 hours on site.
- Think about the crowds. Museums fill up at certain times of day and week. The official site is the place to check.
- Bring ID and comfortable shoes. The visit involves walking and standing.
I do not quote opening hours or ticket prices for the museum, since they change; the official page is the reliable source.
What a Figueres day looks like
A typical day follows the hours in the estimate. You are collected at your Barcelona address in the morning and driven north. You arrive in Figueres in good time for your entry, spend the visit in the museum, and then have lunch and a short walk in the town centre. The afternoon is for a second stop, if you want one, or the drive straight back to Barcelona.
If you want to see more of Dalí, ask me about the stops nearby. Each addition lengthens the day, and I tell you how the hours change before you confirm.
Why go by private driver rather than train
The train to Figueres is a good option for one person on a flexible day. A private driver changes the shape of the trip in three ways. First, the day starts at your door, not at a station, and ends there. Second, the stops are yours: breakfast on the way, a viewpoint, a second town. Third, the group stays together, which matters for families and for groups of friends who want to share the day.
For art lovers there is a fourth reason: you set the pace in the museum. Nobody is watching the clock for a return train, and if you want to spend longer in front of a room, you can, within the hours you hire.
