The Costa Brava starts close to Barcelona and keeps going north to the French border, which makes it less a single destination than a coast to sample. Barcelona to Costa Brava by private driver lets you decide how much of it to see: one town and a long lunch, or three coves and a walk.
Barcelona to Costa Brava: distance and drive time
I use Lloret de Mar as the reference point for the southern coast. It is 75 km from Plaça de Catalunya, about 1 hour without traffic (route on Google Maps). Towns further north take longer: Begur is 131 km and Cadaqués 170 km, and each has its own page, Begur and the coves and Cadaqués.
The drive is on motorway for most of the way. In summer, the coast roads around the resorts are busier at midday, and I plan the route so you arrive before the beach traffic.
What a Costa Brava day trip costs
A day on the Costa Brava is hired by the hour with the driver at your disposal. The daily minimum is 6 hours. The estimate below is for the southern coast: 1 hour each way plus 5 hours on site, which is 7 hours of hire. Prices include VAT and are per vehicle.
| Vehicle | Seats | Day estimate (7 h) |
|---|---|---|
| E-Class | 3 | €550 |
| S-Class | 3 | €870 |
| V-Class | 7 | €550 |
| Sprinter | 16 | €695 |
| Minibus | 33 | €790 |
| Coach | 60 | €790 |
The S-Class is booked by the hour only. If you want a longer day, the 8-hour price for the E-Class or V-Class is €630, and extra hours are charged at the hourly rate. The full list is on the prices page.
Which Costa Brava towns to visit
The coast has many choices, so a short list helps.
- Lloret de Mar is the closest large resort, with a long beach and an old town to walk.
- Tossa de Mar has a walled old quarter above the sea; the Tossa de Mar day trip page covers it.
- Begur and the coves suit swimmers and photographers.
- Cadaqués is the far northern village, whiter than the rest and a long drive.
The Catalonia tourism website has an overview of the coast and its towns. I do not choose for you: tell me whether you want beaches, walks or food, and I sketch a route with two or three stops.
Costa Brava by train, bus or car
Searches for Barcelona to Costa Brava by train or bus come from people comparing options, and public transport does reach many towns. The Costa Brava tourist board explains it on its public transport page. Where a private driver wins:
- you want to see more than one town in a day;
- you travel with children, a pushchair or heavy bags;
- the cove you want is off the line;
- you are a group and one vehicle is easier than many tickets.
If you only need one stop on a bus line, public transport may suit you better, and I would say so.
Costa Brava with Girona and Figueres
A frequent request is the coast with a stop inland. Girona fits between Barcelona and the coast, and Figueres sits just to the north, with the Dalí Theatre-Museum. A longer day with two such stops runs past 7 hours, and I send an estimate based on the plan you give me.
Choosing the vehicle
For a couple, the E-Class is quiet and comfortable. The V-Class is the usual choice for families, since it seats up to 7 and costs the same as the E-Class on this day. The Sprinter takes up to 16 for a group, and the minibus and coach take 33 and 60. The fleet page shows them all.
Planning your Costa Brava day
A day on the coast goes best when it has a shape. Points I raise with every guest:
- Choose the coast first. The southern coast is close enough for 5 hours on site. The north takes longer and needs a longer day.
- Pick one beach or cove, not five. Most of the day is better spent in two places than in five.
- Plan lunch. Restaurants near the sea fill up in summer, so I plan your arrival ahead of the lunch rush.
- Pack for the water. Swimwear and a towel, and shoes for rocky paths.
I do not quote opening hours or beach services, as they change with the season. For a first look at the coast, the Catalonia tourism website gives an overview, and I can suggest what to check.
What a Costa Brava day looks like
The 7-hour estimate fits a simple day. You are collected in Barcelona in the morning and driven up the coast for about an hour. You stop at a town, walk the old streets, take a swim, and have lunch near the water. The afternoon is for a second stop or a slow drive along the coast road, and then the way back to Barcelona in the early evening.
If you want to see more towns, the day can be extended, and the extra hours are charged at the hourly rate. Tell me your priorities and I plan accordingly.
Costa Brava in different seasons
The coast changes with the calendar. Summer brings full beaches and slower roads, so I advise an early start and a plan that avoids the middle of the day on the sand. Spring and autumn are calmer, good for walking the coastal paths, and the towns feel more local. Winter is quiet, and some places close, so check before you pick a date.
Whatever the season, the drive is the same length, so you can choose the date first and the stops afterwards.
