PortAventura is one of the most requested destinations for families landing in Barcelona. The park and the Salou hotels are about an hour and twenty minutes south, and a private chauffeur removes the change with tired children and suitcases. This page covers the route, the options and how I quote it.
Barcelona airport to PortAventura: distance and time
From Barcelona-El Prat to PortAventura World it is 100 km, about 1 h 20 min without traffic (route on Google Maps). The drive follows the motorway south along the coast. On summer weekends and at the start of school holidays it can be slower, so I plan some margin.
The park publishes dates, tickets and hotel information on the official PortAventura World site.
Barcelona airport to Salou transfer
Salou has more searches than PortAventura itself, and the two are neighbours. If your hotel is in Salou, tell me the name and address in the form and I quote that drop-off. Salou, PortAventura hotels and nearby resorts are all quoted on request, per vehicle, VAT included.
From the city rather than the airport, Barcelona to PortAventura has a fixed price per vehicle; see the destinations page, the Barcelona to PortAventura page and the Barcelona to Salou page.
Barcelona airport to PortAventura by train, bus or taxi
A quick overview of the alternatives:
- Train: Renfe serves the Tarragona area, but you change and then still need a way to the park.
- Bus: coach services link Barcelona with Salou. I do not list times or fares because they change.
- Taxi: possible, but agree the price in advance for such a long ride.
- Private chauffeur: one vehicle from the terminal to the hotel.
For families the main difference is the number of changes with luggage and strollers. A single vehicle avoids them.
Reus airport and other airports
Reus airport is closer to PortAventura than Barcelona. If you fly into Reus, see Reus airport to Barcelona; for a transfer from Reus to PortAventura, ask for a quote. Girona airport is far to the north and rarely makes sense for this trip.
Which vehicle for a family or a group
| Vehicle | Passengers | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Mercedes E-Class | up to 3 | couples |
| Mercedes V-Class | up to 7 | families with luggage |
| Mercedes Sprinter | up to 16 | two families or a party |
| Minibus | up to 33 | school or club groups |
| Coach | up to 60 | large tour groups |
Count suitcases and pushchairs as well as people. A V-Class takes a family of five with luggage comfortably, and the fleet page shows the interiors. If you need anything specific for children, ask in the form and I answer honestly.
Planning the family day
Families arriving at El Prat often have a long day behind them. A transfer straight to the hotel in Salou or at the park means no changes and no waiting for several tickets at once. Tell me the flight time and the hotel name, and I plan the pick-up from the real landing time.
For the return, work back from the flight: the drive takes about an hour and twenty minutes in free traffic, and the airport needs its own margin. I confirm the departure time with you when you book.
Timing around park hours and flights
Park days are long, and tired children make the return easier when the car is waiting at the exit. Tell me the time you expect to leave the park and I schedule the pick-up for then. If you are flying out the same evening, work back from the check-in time of your airline and leave extra margin for the motorway north to Barcelona.
Hotel check-in times differ, so on arrival day it can help to go straight to the park and leave the bags at reception. Your hotel will tell you what it offers.
