Montserrat sits in the mountains inland from Barcelona, and from the airport you can reach it without crossing the city. A private chauffeur turns the trip into one leg from the arrivals hall. This page explains the route, the choices and how I price it.
Barcelona airport to Montserrat: distance and time
From Barcelona-El Prat to the Montserrat Monastery it is 56 km, about 55 min without traffic (route on Google Maps). The last part is a mountain road, so the time can stretch on busy weekends and in good weather when many visitors go up.
Before you plan the day, check the access information on the official Montserrat visitor site, since the monastery and its services have their own schedules.
Barcelona airport to Montserrat transfer price
The airport-to-Montserrat transfer is quoted on request. It depends on the vehicle, whether the driver waits and the date. Prices are in euros, include VAT and are per vehicle, not per person.
From the city, Barcelona to Montserrat has a fixed price per vehicle, which you can see on the destinations page and the prices page.
One-way transfer or a day at Montserrat
There are two ways to organise it:
- One way: the driver takes you from the airport to Monistrol or the monastery and leaves. This suits guests who have a hotel there or will return another way.
- Driver at your disposal: the driver waits while you visit and then takes you on to Barcelona. This is priced by the hour, with a 6-hour minimum per day, so check the rates on the chauffeur by the hour page.
The second suits a layover or an arrival day when you want to see Montserrat before the city. For a day trip from the city, see Montserrat tour from Barcelona.
Barcelona airport to Montserrat by train, bus or metro
Visitors ask about public options:
- Metro and train: the metro takes you into the city, and the TMB site describes it. Trains then continue toward Montserrat, and Renfe or the monastery site list the services. It involves changes with luggage.
- Bus: there are coach services in the area. I do not list times because they change.
- Taxi: possible, but agree the price in advance.
- Private chauffeur: one vehicle, no changes.
Choosing the vehicle
| Vehicle | Passengers | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Mercedes E-Class | up to 3 | couples |
| Mercedes V-Class | up to 7 | families |
| Mercedes Sprinter | up to 16 | friends or colleagues |
| Minibus | up to 33 | larger groups |
| Coach | up to 60 | tour groups |
Mountain roads are comfortable in the Mercedes cars and vans. See the fleet page for details.
Planning a layover or arrival day at Montserrat
Some guests land in the morning and want to see Montserrat before checking in to a Barcelona hotel. That works if you allow for luggage and for the time you spend at the monastery. Tell me the flight time and how long you want to stay, and I suggest whether a one-way trip or a driver at your disposal fits better.
Mountain weather changes, and the monastery has its own schedule, so I would check the official site the day before. If conditions change, tell me and I adjust the plan with you.
What to expect on the road
The first half of the drive leaves the airport area on the motorway; the second half climbs into the mountains towards the monastery. The road is well maintained, but the bends are slower than the distance suggests. That is why I quote the drive time as about 55 minutes and not less, and why I recommend allowing a margin if you have a fixed entry time or a return flight the same day.
Montserrat is also a busy site at weekends and holidays. If you want a quieter visit, ask me about an earlier start and I plan the arrival around it.
